Statistics of A-tests (old experimental Association tests)

A-10 - Netherlandic, 50 items

This was the very first test I ever showed to others, early 1995. The first nine A-tests have never been taken and were conceived in 1994.

Note: I was shocked at the time that the scores were so low, and thought I was doing something wrong, that the problems were too far-fetched. I had expected much higher scores intuitively. It was the first time I saw scores on a test created by me. In hindsight I know this kind of score pattern is entirely normal on a hard test, and that this very first test, despite having many bad items which have never been solved, had ruthless discriminative power in the high range right from the start on.

Later I added easier items to the tests to make them doable for more people, realizing my intuitive notion of item difficulty was tremendously off on the low side. I also learnt that this underestimating of difficulty - or overestimating of others' intelligence - is typical for highly intelligent individuals; it is the naivity of assuming your own intelligence level in others. I learnt that creating IQ tests is not so much a matter of "how can I make hard enough problems so they won't get everything correct", but rather of "how low do I have to go to to be understood" and "how easy do I have to make it to avoid getting a score pattern concentrated at or just above zero".

A-12 - Netherlandic, oral, 40 items

It is not possible to norm this test because it has a slight negative correlation with other tests on the whole, despite having been taken by a reasonable number of people with a reasonable spread of scores on this and other tests. So, this test has failed to measure anything, probably because of its oral nature. The same problems that work well when taken with pen on paper and ample time fail when administered orally with limited response time.
